Bethany Nickerson, LMSW

Hi! My name is Bethany and I am a therapist, social worker, and sexual assault advocate. I work with people who are dealing with perfectionism, infertility, anxiety, loss, relationship issues, and trauma. My goal is to empower my clients to practice self compassion, lean into vulnerability, strengthen their resilience, and create a meaningful life they love.

Trauma Navigator
Most people think of a traumatic event as something like going to war, a plane crash, a rape, or something else that was life threatening. While some of us will never experience one of those ‘big T’ events, we all experience things that have lasting impacts on our well-being. These ‘little t’ traumas are not life threatening but can still lead to reactions or coping skills that are not helpful or get in the way of us living our best life. I am certified in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) which is a therapy technique that processes distressing memories and the negative self beliefs associated with those memories in order to form more adaptive connections. This type of therapy can reduce distress and help people step back and mindfully respond to their triggers rather than reacting to them.

Mind Body Connector
I believe in the power of the mind body connection and before moving to New York taught yoga for several years. I am passionate about helping people learn to get out of their own heads and into their body in order to calm anxiety, feel more grounded, and reset their nervous system.

Emotion Explorer
I frequently talk to clients who feel confused and flooded by their own emotions. They want to feel happier and wonder what is ‘wrong’ with them. The truth is nothing is wrong with them. It is healthy and normal to experience the full range of emotions: anger, sadness, joy, and everything in between. I believe you can experience discomfort without it overwhelming you. I encourage people to be curious about what they are feeling, develop an emotional vocabulary, and learn to ask for what they want and need.

How I Help
I believe that you are the expert on your experience and take a holistic strength-based approach to therapy. I love helping clients examine their core beliefs and where they came from in order to clarify what is working for them and what is not. My therapy sessions are collaborative and use a combination of evidence based modalities and creativity. I enjoy working with my clients to develop routines and coping skills that help them find balance, create positive habits, and manage stress more effectively.

More About Me
I am originally from Utah and find every excuse to get outside whether that means mountains, forests, deserts, or beaches. One of the first things I did after moving to New York was get my library card and I am constantly reading. Some of my favorite things are: snail mail, yoga, laughing, live music, volunteer work, traveling, taking photos, dessert, and spoiling my dog rotten.
