Elizabeth Cobb, LCSW, ACT
My name is Elizabeth Cobb. I’m an LCSW and founder of Cobb Psychotherapy LCSW. I work with young adults who are struggling with life transitions, finding a purpose, and may be having a life “crisis.” Often my clients are dealing with depression and anxiety related to difficulty making decisions, are stuck in an unsatisfying job, or are feeling confused and uncertain about the next step in their life. My goal is to help them understand what they want and what’s holding them back.
I received my masters in social work from Columbia University and am licensed to practice social work in the states of New York and Delaware. I am trained in cognitive behavioral therapy and EMDR.
I founded my practice in 2015 and it’s the second act in my career. Once I started my practice I realized that I’m a true entrepreneur and love the big picture. Building a successful business stretched me not just professionally, but also personally in ways I couldn’t have imagined.
Today Cobb Psychotherapy LCSW is a wonderful community of over 20 therapists who provide compassionate, approachable, and affordable care to hundreds of New Yorkers. One of the things I love most about my practice is the opportunity to mentor the next generation of therapists. Through supervising my staff I am constantly learning and growing. I created this practice not only as a place that I would want to go as a client, but where I would want to work as a therapist. I’m very proud to have a 100% retention rate of staff over the two years we’ve been in business.
I know that starting a business can be hard and it’s scary to jump into the unknown (I’ve been there). But for many people, the only way to have the career they love is to create it.
Millennial/Quarter Life Crisis Survivor
When I was 23 I was at an impasse in my life. I had a great job at a global executive search firm and although I wasn’t feeling fulfilled at my job, it was comfortable so I didn’t have a sense of urgency to shake things up. Then disaster struck in 2008 and there were massive layoffs at my company. While being laid off was scary, crisis often leads to opportunity. I had to take a long, hard look at what I wanted to do with my life. Would it be the easy route of finding another job in my field or trying something else?
I have been a lifelong therapy client and I worked with my therapist to help me figure out what I wanted to do with my life. While being unemployed wasn’t ideal, I finally had a choice! After college I had just fallen into my job and followed the path of least resistance. Now I could start over and be intentional in my decision.
Ultimately, I realized that being a therapist was my calling. I applied to Columbia University to get my masters in social work and three months later got started. My message to you is that even though it’s hard, you can figure out what you’re meant to do and once you’re on the other side it feels great.

I work with people who are having a “crisis” — they’ve reached a point in their life where their expectations don’t match their reality. I mostly work with clients experiencing a “quarter-life crisis.”

How I help
I explore the underlying resistance/barriers to accomplishing your goals and reaching your expectations in your life. What is holding you back? Is there a fear that if you realize your goals you’ll have to do things that make you uncomfortable? For example, if you become a business owner will you have to network and face your fear of rejection?
I help you to face your fears by using a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy, to understand and challenge negative thoughts and beliefs about yourself and the world, and EMDR, which helps to work through and integrate important memories from your past to help you succeed in the present and future. Together we can work to figure out your purpose.
More About Me
I am a Brooklyn convert and I think I qualify as a New Yorker having been here for 11 years. I majored in International Affairs as an undergraduate and travel is one of my greatest loves. I’ve been to 32 countries and counting! South Africa and the Hudson Valley are two of my favorite places. I love the outdoors and running when the weather permits. I am a proud cat owner and adore my cats Sophie and Sterling. They’re often curled up next to me while I’m reading a good book.
