The irony is that we attempt to disown our difficult stories to appear more whole or more acceptable, but our wholeness – even our whole heartedness - actually depends on the integration of all of our experiences, including the falls.

Hannah Tishman, LMSW

I use a holistic treatment approach, considering each client within their environment, to help treat the whole person by uncovering the source of their difficulty in coping with stressful situations and life transitions. The therapist-client relationship is powerful, and is one that often contributes significantly to healing and emotional wellness. Together we will explore the obstacles that have impacted your daily functioning and relationships. I am committed to working collaboratively, adapting treatment to meet your specific needs, and providing you with the tools you need so you can confidently practice what we learn in our sessions in the outside world. I work with clients who have difficulty managing self-esteem, trouble in their interpersonal relationships, those who suffer from anxiety or depression, or have experienced trauma.

What I Do
I listen. I guide. I create a safe space, providing feedback and empathy.  I am a sounding board for you. I will assist you in transitioning from a place where unhelpful thoughts and behavior patterns are preventing you from utilizing positive coping mechanisms and working towards a more balanced mind. My goal is to help my clients feel at peace, whatever that may look like for them. By fostering an environment filled with warmth and unconditional positive regard, my hope is that together we can directly address what is getting in the way of your inner peace, and make the necessary changes towards wellness and personal success.

How I Help
Coming to therapy for the first time can be difficult, and possibly frightening. You have already taken a huge leap just by reaching out for help. Each day we experience thousands of automatic thoughts, and in turn, many unexpected feelings. I will help you learn how to become more attuned to these thoughts, and work with you to improve your tolerance level for feelings of discomfort, challenge unhelpful cognitions, and process difficult or past traumatic events. A common misconception of  anxiety is the belief that it is more powerful than our ability to cope with it. In reality, it is the exact opposite. I use a strengths-based perspective, recognizing your progress as it surfaces and by evaluating your commitment to treatment. I implement mindfulness by providing psychoeducation on its benefits to the mind/body connection; introducing relaxation techniques in session and focusing on being present in real time. I do this by verbally identifying what is going on in the room during session, as this is often a reflection of your relationship to the world and others outside of therapy.  I have often found that laughter is healing in itself and believe it is important that we not always take ourselves too seriously and share our humor and transparency with one another in order to make progress. By encouraging you to set realistic goals, you can properly manage your expectations, allowing you to make small changes one day at a time. It is my sincere hope that you will begin to notice the positive differences in your life!
