Am I in Balance?

Work-life balance is a common topic I discuss with clients. It can be difficult, in this busy world we live in, to follow through with work expectations and find time for our lives outside of work. Unfortunately, it is friends, family, hobbies and leisure activities that get sacrificed when work starts to overwhelm us.

It is understandable that we will get pulled in one direction more than another. We can’t always be perfectly balanced, but this does not mean we have to forget about our wellness.  There are ways to ensure that wellness is being prioritized and addressed.  Our choices can help with balance and our conversations can create a commitment to balance.  Important conversations, for example, can include sitting down with your partner and agreeing to specific nights you will have dinner together. Additionally, communication skills, such as saying “no” and assertiveness, can play a crucial role in fostering balance and helping you respect your own limits.

Finally, identify what you enjoy, set a schedule and plan ahead. If you enjoy going for walks, take some time each day to step outside for fresh air – even if it's just a walk around the block. If you enjoy a specific workout class, sign up ahead of time and even ask a friend to join – you’ll be partaking in both physical and social wellness at the same time!

Having an obligation to yourself is important and not selfish. By prioritizing your own wellness, you can be a better employee, co-worker, family member and friend. Not only will you feel better about yourself, but you will feel better about the way you interact with the responsibilities of your life. Take some time to ask yourself: Am I in balance? Here are some pointers to get you started:

1.      Do I have time for hobbies and leisure activities?

2.      Am I able to spend enough time with friends and family?

3.      Am I able to relax?

4.      Do I usually feel overwhelmed?

5.      Do I take care of myself?
