What is online therapy?
Online therapy takes place between a therapist and client virtually rather than in person at an office. The therapeutic work is the same but you can have sessions at your convenience instead of meeting in person.
How does it work?
We use a HIPAA secure video software and before your session you will be given instructions for using the virtual platform. Before your therapy session, it is important that you identify a private room that is equipped with internet access and a computer with a webcam. What happens if we have technical difficulties?
We suggest testing your wifi connection before your session to make sure you have a strong signal. We also recommend that you choose a secure wifi network instead of a public one. Another option is to plug your computer directly into your ethernet cable for a more reliable connection.
Despite all of these preparations, it’s possible that there may be technical issues like the video freezing or getting disconnected. During your first session, you’ll discuss with your therapist what to do if this occurs.
Do you offer other forms of online therapy besides video sessions?
We highly recommend video sessions because non-verbal cues, like facial expressions, can be very important in helping your therapist relate to you and be attuned to your needs. Additionally, the sessions feel more personal when you can see your therapist's face.
However, some people, whether it’s for logistical reasons or personal comfort, prefer other types of online therapy. This could include therapy by phone, text, or email. If you are interested in these options please let your potential therapist know during your consultation and a customized plan can be arranged.
Do you offer a free consultation?
Yes, we do. When you contact us about online therapy we will help you to determine the right therapist to fit your needs. Then you can have a free 15-minute video consult to see if they are the right fit for you and to see if online therapy meets your needs.
How is this different than traditional in-person therapy?
Other than not being in the same room together, therapy is basically the same. It may seem strange at first if you’ve been to traditional in-person therapy in the past, but it’s worth giving it a try as there are many benefits. These include:
Accessibility: Many people have circumstances that make it difficult to get to an in-person appointment. Perhaps you’re a parent and it’s hard to find childcare, or you suffer from issues with mobility. These things don’t have to be a barrier to getting the counseling you need.

Privacy: If you feel uncomfortable going into a therapist’s office, online therapy is a great solution. Online therapy is a great way to feel safe and comfortable during the therapy process. The video software we use is 100% HIPAA compliant.
Will my insurance cover online therapy?
Most states and insurance companies now cover online sessions as long as your therapist is licensed in the state where you live. Before your first session, our office staff will help to verify your insurance information to ensure that you’re covered. Our practice is in-network with BCBS and Consolidated Health Plans.
Are videos sessions secure?
All video sessions are HIPAA secure, just like in-person therapy sessions. We use a HIPAA secure video platform so your privacy and information are protected. By doing therapy virtually you actually have more privacy because no one sees you coming into a therapy office. Additionally, your therapist will always use a secure wifi network and sessions are not recorded to ensure your privacy and confidentiality.
Who can I work with?
All of our therapists are licensed social workers and can work with clients in the states where they are licensed.
I don’t live in New York, can we still work together?
It depends on where you live. Our office staff can help determine if your state or country permits online therapy.
I’ll be traveling, can we still work together?
The answer is often yes. However, it depends on where and for how long you will be traveling. If you are traveling, your therapist and our office staff can give you guidance on your options.
